Legend has it, in the 1940s, security guard Hamana Kalili who lost three fingers of his right hand working in the Kahuku Sugar Mill would chase kids off the train as they tried to jump a free ride between Sunset Beach and Kaaawa. Mockery being the native language of young hitchhikers, the kids flashed the two-fingered wave up and down the tracks to signal Hamana was nowhere to be seen and the coast was clear.
